  • Responsibilities

     

    The Asphalt Superintendent position is responsible for safety, planning and scheduling efficient operations, budgeting and cost control, compliance with regulatory agencies, personnel staffing and development, and consistent product quality control in the operation of multiple asphalt plants.

    Essential Fuctions
    • Solid working knowledge, technical knowledge and understanding of asphalt operations and processes to include; excellent planning, organization, decision making, problem solving, communication and supervisory skills. Ability to coordinate and manage people and a variety of activities in a cost effective manner.
    • Excellent leadership skills - demonstrated ability to lead, manage, and motivate a team; steadfast personal commitment to safety, and ability to lead a team toward continuous improvement in safety processes and behaviors. Proven track record for creating employee ownership of safety, production and quality. Ensure compliance with company mandated safety and environmental policies, programs and guidelines as well as regulatory compliance.
    •  Plays a leading role in development and implementation of long term plan.
    •  Assists with the preparation of annual budgets and specifications on purchased equipment. Coordinates purchased material with plant needs. Achieves the highest levels of production and efficiency, housekeeping, and safety while meeting goals set forth in the business and profit plans.
    •  Lead informative morning and afternoon huddles to include crew involvement in the Daily Work Plan to perform efficient operations in a safe work environment. Use the huddles to convey any new DEP or other regulatory agency standards or regulations.
    •  Work with outside contractors, maintenance or otherwise, to complete job tasks in a timely fashion.
    •  Work with Field Managers to increase productivity and decrease waste on a daily basis.
    •  Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills; capable of developing and maintaining good relationships with company and regulatory agency personnel.
    •  Personnel responsibility involving staffing, conducting performance appraisals, training and developing subordinates, promotions, salary increases, terminations, disciplinary actions, etc. Handles safety problems and employee relations issues as they arise.
    •  Ability to work collaboratively with the location's sale representative to support the sales budget with the needed product mix, available inventory and quality products for our customers.
    •  Proven track record in consistently improving safety of the work environment through work plans, Safe Production Teams, hourly employee participation and a close working relationship with the Safety Department goals and initiatives.

     

    Qualifications

    Technical: The individual must also be proficient in Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel and outlook

    Business:   This position requires the superintendent to be a creative problem solver and    

    have strong negotiation skills.

    Leadership/Management: He or she must also be stress-tolerant and able to successfully operate with limited supervision.

    Personal Attributes/Skills: The individual must have excellent planning and organizational skills, along with strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

    Travel Requirements: Travel to Materials corporate office, other asphalt plants and possibly Allan Myers Corporate office.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    Regularly requires the ability to sit, use hands/fingers, reach, talk or hear. Frequently requires the ability to stand, walk, taste or smell. Occasionally requires the ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel or crouch. Occasionally requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Requires the following specific types of vision: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

     

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    Exposure to the following environmental conditions: moving mechanical parts, high/precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic/caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, work with explosives and vibration. Subject to loud noise levels due to equipment operation.

     

    TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS:

    Position requires travel to and from asphalt plants to monitor status of production.
